The revolutionary impact of globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation can be perceived from the growing demand for management professionals, who can effectively manage in a world of business characterised by global competition and rapid technological advancements.

First formalised management education in India started in late 1950s and reached a mind boggling pace with over 600 institutions currently offering programs in management at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
It is mandatory for all the management colleges/institutions in India to get themselves recognised by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a statutory body of Government of India, responsible for the maintenance of norms and standards in technical education system through out the country.

Securing Admission
Admission to prestigious institutes like Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) is on the basis of a Common Admission Test (CAT) followed by interviews. Other institutions admit students on the basis of their own examinations or through combined entrance tests like MAT, XAT, etc., and group discussions/interviews. NRI students can take these tests.
International students/PIOs can seek direct admission in some of the private institutions by applying to Ed.CIL or directly to the concerned institutions.
Some management institutes also offer a one-year diploma course in specialisations like marketing, sales, industrial relations, personnel management, social welfare, material management, office and systems management, production management, etc.
